In the mid-1970’s Pastor Rayburn Blair from Temple Baptist Church in Tallahassee had the vision to start a children’s home. 14 acres was soon donated for the home, so Pastor Blair contacted Billy Hudson to help. Bro. Billy, while a police officer with the Tallahassee Police Dept., along with his family had already been caring for girls who needed a temporary stay. Bro. Billy also operated The Gospel in Song radio broadcast, so he went on air to begin raising funds for the Lighthouse. Pastor Blair, Bro. Billy and others made up the first Board of Directors for the Lighthouse. Once funds were raised, ground was broken, construction began, and the Lighthouse opened in October 1977 to provide a temporary home for boys and girls of all ages. In the late 80’s and early 90’s the home transitioned to being a home for troubled teen girls only.
